When a figure from Isabella’s past comes crashing back into her life and asks for her forgiveness, she plunges head first into an awakening of truth, betrayal and self-worth that alters the direction of her life. Female friendships are tested as they wrestle to confront ideas of identity through perspective and experience that comes from middle age. Can someone truly change? What measure do we use to know if they have? Measure² catches up with some of Shakespeare's most dynamic and complex characters whose stories are entrenched in world dominated by the male gaze. Now with a contemporary consciousness, conversations about feminism, patriarchy and intersectionality are opened, and how women from every generation have internalized misogyny when confronting their experiences of harassment and abuse. The restrictions placed on women in the Elizabethan era seem far removed from our modern world, but when their stories are placed in a present-day context, it becomes evident how little the world has really changed. Giving these characters the benefit of maturity allows them to explore these ideas as we watch them awaken to new understandings. As much as we must move forward, telling new stories, we must also work to reconcile the stories we’ve been telling for centuries.
Measure² has had two one-day script development workshops with recommender grants from Crow’s Theatre and Studio 180. A Toronto Arts Council writing grant has funded the second draft, and a third workshop is planned for the summer of 2021.
