WHO IS THE ZOS FOR? - Particularly good for emerging actors, the ZOS creates collaborative environments for actors to develop their understanding of where the heart of acting lives within them. But it’s also a great refresher for actors who want to reconnect with the simplicity of listening to their artist's heart and reacting without the pressure of a product.

WHY DOES THE ZOS WORK? - Being able to hear yourself and others requires practice. Improvised play creates an environment for true listening and getting out of the head and into the body. We take risks when we play, that we might otherwise be too frightened or embarrassed to take outside the safety of play. Play also engages the listening muscle in a way that allows us to slow down and live truthfully within specific circumstances. Listening is not just hearing, we don’t just listen with our ears, but with our whole being.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN A ZOS CLASS? - A combination of repetitive warm up exercises specifically designed to engage the listening muscle and build trust and collaboration with the class. Followed by group improvised scenarios that change location and grow in complexity and increase in intensity throughout the course.

When I am coaching or teaching actors or painters my teaching practice focus’s on training an artist to be reflexive, by listening to their impulsive response to a moment. My job is to help students connect to their artistry by encouraging them to think like creators and engage their curiosity. I believe strongly in helping students work collaboratively. Collaborative environments create connections that foster community, and build support networks through trust and empathy. Every artist needs a safe enriched space to develop their individual process, and practicing with other artists helps develops muscle memory; the practiced ability to respond without thinking. I strive for an inclusive and transparent environment that supports self-reflexive experiential learning. The next generation of artists are empowered, multi-disciplinary creators who are envisioning new platforms, and ways to tell stories in a more diverse and inclusive world. In developing their curiosity about their craft, I hope to encourage our emerging artists to embrace their artistry, and go beyond what we have ever envisioned before.

Jennifer Wigmore and Christine Brubaker have collectively taught in ten different acting training programs in Canada and, despite variations in culture from school to school, have identified shared pervasive patterns. This article identifies two of the largest obstacles preventing change and growth within acting training programs in Canada. Jennifer and Christine hope that this article can help to open a dialogue for real change.
